MEDIA SOURCES |
Ecuador Newspapers One can find information about Ecuador through the Ecuadorian embassy's website as well as the US Embassy in Ecuador and USAID's Ecuador site. Another important site for information about Ecuador's financial status is the International Monetary Fund. The Returned Volunteer community maintains a loose collection of news sites. Articles can be found at Peace Corps On-line. The Peace Corps agency also offers news releases on their website. The Economist has the most comprehensive source of analysis on Ecuador. Some articles are by subscription, but there are great links from this site. The Economist also has up-to-date wire stories from Ecuador. The Washington Post also keeps a collection of wire service articles on Ecuador. Peace Corps Volunteers blog anonymously to the Third Goal. Great resource for unvarished perspectives on Peace Corps service. Check out foreign media perspectives on the US. WatchingAmerica.com translates media to English and posts from a wide variety of sources.

Field research opportunity: disabled access to telecenters |
Contact Ben Bellows (bbellows AT berkeley DOT edu) if you're interested... A friend of mine recently finished his information technology PhD
at Berkeley (now at MS in Redmond) is in the process of negotiating a
study proposal for technology and employability in Latin America. One
of the countries identified is Ecuador, and the focus of the work is
likely to be on technology centers and accessibility. For the purposes
of the project, they define accessibility broadly, but a significant
part of the intended research is to be on disability issues.
This would entail some primary research on disabled peoples'
experiences with accessibility through telecenters, and involves
interviewing both recipients of telecenter services and stakeholders at
telecenters, interviewing them on the importance (or not) of services
for the disabled as part of their work.
They are looking for potential partners who would be interested in
the field work part of the project in Ecuador. Ideally such partners
would be fairly comfortable working in Ecuador (if they are from
Ecuador, that is fantastic). This could be a great project for an
existing student working on these issues, or someone planning to apply
to graduate school, but an institutional partner -- a university or NGO
interested in collaborative work would also be great.

"Third Goal" blog |
If you are a Peace Corps volunteer looking for a way to share your story with others, consider "Third Goal" your home. If you are a visitor and would like to read more about Peace Corps experiences, add a few comments to the stories already posted encouraging writers to post more. Having a voice on the internet is getting easier every day. According to one report, a new blog is created every seven seconds. Sharing your story is no longer the problem; getting heard is. By participating in a community blog focused on a single topic, your voice and stories will be heard by a greater audience. Readers will begin to flock to Third Goal to learn the latest trials and tribulations of a large group of volunteers. Visitors who know your pen name - your friends and family - can visit a link that contains just your most recent posts. Strangers who don’t personally know anyone in the Peace Corps, however, receive combined content from all authors in any given region. By adding your story and voice to Third Goal, you help create a sustainable resource that “Help[s] promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans.” |

Ambassador Invites FOE Leaders to Breakfast |
On Wednesday, August 25th, 2004, Ambassador Raul Gangotena and his Minister, Mae Montano, invited Josh Busby, Tad Baldwin, Monique Ware, and recently returned volunteer Erica Pearson to discuss possible joint endeavors. We met at the Capital Hilton on 16th Street on August 25th for several pleasant hours of conversation. Dr. Gangotena suggested three areas in which he is seeking assistance. The first is supporting more higher education for the indigenous and African population through the use of debt swaps, in which debt payments would flow to this program and not to the creditors. The second was an expansion of this same idea to also include health and welfare expenditures for the lowest income families, and be funded at $500 million annually. The third was seeking support for the next Free Trade Area, targeted for Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru; he is hopeful that this proposal will reach the hill next May or June. From the FOE side, Josh impressed them with the home page of the soon-to-be-released web page. He requested that they send on county information for posting on the site. Tad also requested use of the Embassy at the time of the next NPCA Conference in Washington, probably in the summer of 2006. |
