On Wednesday, August 25th, 2004, Ambassador Raul Gangotena and his Minister, Mae Montano, invited Josh Busby, Tad Baldwin, Monique Ware, and recently returned volunteer Erica Pearson to discuss possible joint endeavors. We met at the Capital Hilton on 16th Street on August 25th for several pleasant hours of conversation. Dr. Gangotena suggested three areas in which he is seeking assistance. The first is supporting more higher education for the indigenous and African population through the use of debt swaps, in which debt payments would flow to this program and not to the creditors. The second was an expansion of this same idea to also include health and welfare expenditures for the lowest income families, and be funded at $500 million annually. The third was seeking support for the next Free Trade Area, targeted for Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru; he is hopeful that this proposal will reach the hill next May or June. From the FOE side, Josh impressed them with the home page of the soon-to-be-released web page. He requested that they send on county information for posting on the site. Tad also requested use of the Embassy at the time of the next NPCA Conference in Washington, probably in the summer of 2006. |
